Missional Church
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” - Luke 4:18-19
In keeping with Jesus’ own statement, the mission ministry at Second Presbyterian Church seeks to live out His ministry in our time and place by sharing the gospel through word and deed.
In doing so, it will educate the congregation about the centrality of mission in the life of the church and provide ways and means for them to participate through the responsible use of their time, talent, and treasure, both individually and corporately.
What is Missional – A Short Answer
"Jesus told us to go into all the world and be his ambassadors, but many churches today have inadvertently changed the "go and be" command to a "come and see" appeal. We have grown attached to buildings, programs, staff and a wide variety of goods and services designed to attract and entertain people...Missional is a helpful term used to describe what happens when you and I replace the "come to us" invitations with a "go to them" life. [A missional church seeks] a life where "the way of Jesus" informs and radically transforms our existence to one wholly focused on sacrificially living for him and others and where we adopt a missionary stance in relation to our culture. It speaks of the very nature of the Jesus follower." ---Rick Meigs
“A missional church is [1] a unified body of believers, [2] intent on being God’s missionary presence [3] to the indigenous community that surrounds them, [4] recognizing that God is already at work.” -- Brad Brisco
