Bringing the Good News

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God Reigns.” Isaiah 52:7

Sunday Schedule Change for this Fall

Although the summer is not even half over, it’s not too early to begin thinking about the fall. Rally Day (the beginning of fall programming) falls on August 22, when there will be one combined worship service at 10am. After this service, there will be a chance for 2PCers of all ages (children, youth and adults) to explore the discipleship options during the 10am Christian Education hour available this fall.

Summer Camps at 2PC

Happy 4th of July! It’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached this point in the summer! We’re also halfway through our schedule of children’s and youth camps for 2010. When I meet people in the community who grew up at Second Pres, one of the first things they mention to me is, “I went to all those camps growing up!” Along with choir tour, summer church camps at 2PC clearly provide some of the happiest memories for the young people of the church.

Pray for the PC(USA)’s General Assembly

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) will be held in Minneapolis this coming week, from Saturday 7/3 through 7/10. The General Assembly is like the congress of the Presbyterian denomination. It meets every other year, and is composed of elders and pastors from all of the different presbyteries (local groupings of Presbyterian churches) throughout the country.

I was honored this year by our presbytery (the Presbytery of Great Rivers) to be elected to serve as one of our Presbytery’s five commissioners. Although I served as a Youth Advisory Delegate from my home presbytery in Ohio to that year’s General Assembly as a high school senior, I have never returned since then. I am eager to help discern God’s will for this denomination as we seek to participate in God’s mission to the world.

Moving into Act IV: The Prophets for the King

When I wrote this, the high school students had just left for the Chancel Choir tour, this year headed to the eastern states. By the time you read this, I will have spent the last week with them. I look forward to sharing the stories of what God has been doing in and through us at the Chancel Choir home concert on Sunday, June 20 at 7pm in the sanctuary.

I’m also eager to hear from you how the kick-off of the new sermon series went! On June 20, Dr. Don Crittenden begins the series The Prophets for the King.
