2PC Mission Matters e-Newsletter: Vol. 1, Issue 6, October, 2010
Jesus sent us to be his hands, feet and voice for a world in need of hope. The church is called by God to be witnesses of what God has done in Jesus Christ, and what God will do when Jesus comes again. At 2PC, our mission is to share the heart of Christ in the heart of the community. As a church, we are called to help serve the needs of both the local community and the world.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. Mark 10:45
. . . from the Global & Local Mission Teams
Do you have a sense that God's plan for you involves becoming more involved in missions this year. Consider joining either the Global or Local Mission Team. Each meets during the first week of the month at 5:30 PM at the church. If you have any questions about the teams, about any mission work we do that you feel called to participate in, or about anything else involving missions, please, contact either mission team through don.crittenden@secondpres.info.
Calls to Action
. . . Marty Picket, Local Mission Team: Habitat for Humanity Build Day
On October 30, a new build--a new beginning for a family in our community--is beginning at 1005 W. Olive St., Bloomington. If you can assist in this exciting and worthy project, sign up at the Habitat display in the 2PC lobby or contact Mary Pickett at 265-8068 or mdog pickett@yahoo.com. Workers should bring hammars and other tools if possible; check the Habitat for Humanity website at http://www.habitatmclean.org/ for directions to the build site.
. . . Dr. Don Crittenden, Dir. of Discipleship & Mission: WACC Feed the Hungry
Our annual Feed the Hungry food drive for Western Avenue Community Center will be held throughout the month of November. You may bring canned food items or purchase prepackaged amounts here at the church. Don needs help with planning and execution of this month-long event. Contact him at don.crittenden@secondpres.info or call 828-6297 if you are able to assist Don with this short-term project.
. . . from the Local Mission Team: CAREKITS for the Regional Alternative Schools
. . . We have received a request from teachers at the alternative high schools again asking our members to create CareKits for students. Personal hygiene issues arise for many students because of lack of money and/or home situations not conducive to good hygiene; this has an impact on school attendance and participation. Teachers have expressed their gratitude for having last year's supplies available when they needed to address these sensitive issues with their students. Bags with directions and crates for collection of filled bags are available near the Prairie St. and Connection Point entrances. They ask that you also include a little note of encouragement such as, "Wishing you a great school year with many blessings, Your friends at Second Pres. Church." You can create your own CareKits by collecting a regular size shampoo, conditioner, soap or body wash, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, acne facewash, body lotion, and and comb and/or pick. Please label your bag with "Male" or "Female" if appropriate. We thank you for caring.
. . . from Carol White, Local Missions Team Member: Cedar Ridge Elementary School
Volunteers are needed in a new effort at Cedar Ridge, a new elementary school in Unit 5 with over-crowding and a large percentage of children at high-risk for school failure. To allow teachers to spend more time with their students, volunteers can relieve teacher loads by completing some of the practical tasks such as gathering materials, running copies, and assembling work. Volunteers will work in teams of three for three hours from 9 AM-12 PM on seven Wednesdays during the school year. For questions or to sign up, contact Carol White at 662-4862 or at carolwhite77@gmail.com.
Priority Mission Partners
. . . from DeAnn Worth, Global Mission Team Member: Chiapas, Mexico
DeAnn traveled to our Priority Mission Partner in Chiapas, Mexico, from Oct. 9-17 as part of a Medical Mission team. The team diagnoses and treats the native population who travel on foot and by cart from miles away to seek treatment at the nearly completed Las Manos de Christo Medical Clinic. We look forward to hearing about the progress of the clinic, its workers, and its patients. Through our commitment to Chiapas, 2PC members and friends are able to continue God's work there.
. . . Dr. Don Crittenden, Dir. of Discipleship & Mission: Chiapas, Mexico
Don traveled from October 13-17 to Ocosingo, Chiapas, to visit our mission partner there, the Tzeltal Synod, and to participate in a series of meetings related to the opening of the medical clinic. He also sought counsel regarding how we can best continue to serve them as our Priority Partner this year.
. . . Dr. Don Crittenden, Dir. of Discipleship & Mission: Restoration Christian Church
Our five-year partnership with The Restoracion Church, continues to bring joy to our church and the community as we work together to bridge the culture and language differences between 2PC and the local Hispanic population. The Santana family invites one and all to the bilingual services on Sunday evenings at 5:00 PM in Fellowhship Hall.
We are excited to share the news that Pastor David Santana will be preaching all three services on Sunday, November 7. Dr. Hardwick will be translating. We extend a warm invitation to the congregation to meet the Santana family between services. This is more step in our partnershp with our Priority Partner.
Global Mission Partners & Connections
. . . from Jason & Lisa Carter: WEC Connection in Edinburgh, Scotland
We continue to support, although at a lower level, Jason and Lisa Carter who left 2PC to serve with Worldwide Evangelisation for Christ in Equatorial Guinea. They felt called to further study in Edinburough before returning to EG to continue their work with many ministries including developing and growing a divinity school, planting churches, and ministering to the indigenous populations of that country.
Jason recently emailed, "Since many have written asking about how we are settling in--this newlsetter tries to give you a (fun) bit of flavor for our new surroundings: settling in, getting established, starting school, and getting around in our new town and working hard in some new studies. Whew! " As he wrote, he was preparing for the upcoming historic Lausanne Congress in South Africa. He and notable friends from EG will be traveling there to participate.
To connect with Jason and Lisa and keep up with the news of their family and their quest to better serve the country of EG, contact them at thecarterteam@hotmail.com and ask to receive their newsletter "The Carter Chronicles". They welcome your interest and spiritual support.
Local Mission Partners & Connections
. . . from Carol White, Local Missions Team Member: Serving on Saturday (SOS) Mission Day
On Saturday, Sept. 25, 2PC members participated in another successful SOS Day. Volunteers worked at five different sites including Habitat ReStore where they sorted and organized equipment donations and at Western Avenue Community Center where they repaired and painted playground equipment. We also helped at the Pregnancy Resource Center sorting donations for babies and toddlers and at the Home Sweet Home Mission where volunteers sorted donations in the warehouse and performed landscaping and clean-up tasks on the grounds. The volunteers were greatly appreciated by the organizations where they served for helping to "Share the Heart of Christ in the Heart of the Community". See the Calendar below for 2011 SOS Mission Days and plan to join us; it's sure to be a rewarding experience for you! If you have any questions or concerns about serving, contact Carol White at 662-4862 or at carolwhite77@gmail.com.
. . . from Denny Steele and John Schoening: Local Missions Team Members, WACC
Things are going well at Western Avenue Community Center. There are 20 children in the after-school program which meets Mondays-Thursdays from 3:30-5:00 PM. Mid Central Community Action shared unexpected funds with WACC which resulted in serving 161 families on Monday September 27, with two bags of basic bulk food items not typically available through the regular food pantry. This effort reached families such as seniors and those who don't possess a LINC card or regularly use food stamps or for other reasons don't often attend the food pantry.
The floor refurbishing is near completion at the Lewis Irwin Neighborhood Center (LINC) where a collaboration with the ISU Fine Arts Department called "Basketball and ART" was recently highlighted in The Pantagraph. The Hispanic outreach and gang intervention programs are actively reaching those populations, and members of the 100 Black Men organization are becoming involved with WACC members tutoring students at LINC.
