Membership Exploration Course
Whether you've been visiting Second Pres for a while and want to make it your church home, or you're wondering why anyone would join a church in the first place, you're invited to the upcoming Membership Exploration Course. The course is required to become a member of 2PC, but more importantly, it's an opportunity to learn about church membership, to be introduced to 2PC's vision by the pastoral staff, and to get to know other people who are interested in joining 2PC. There is a kickoff dinner on Nov. 19, followed by a class on Nov. 21. On Nov. 22, new members are introduced to the congregation. Please email dean.kladder@secondpres.info to register or with questions. You can also go online to http://secondpres.info/visitors-center/exploring-membership for more info.
October Session Update
The Session is composed of 19 elders who provide spiritual leadership for the church, and the 2PC pastoral staff. Currently, one of important issues the Session is facing is the scope of spring 2010's capital campaign. The capital campaign's primary emphasis will be to pay off the debt from the new sanctuary, and if giving remains strong, Second Pres will owe approximately $2.6 million, plus interest, when the next campaign begins.
Between now and February, the Session will determine whether or not to add additional items to this campaign. Some candidates are a tithe to mission, a roof for Grace Hall, a new freezer/refrigerator, acoustic improvements in the sanctuary and a reconfiguration of Java Post.
At October's meeting, the Session heard the trustees' analysis of the most expensive potential addition to the campaign: the Capen Building. This building sits on the northeast corner of 2PC's block and primarily houses outside ministries like Faith in Action, Habitat for Humanity and Restoration Church. While structurally sound, the building is deficient in many ways, and the time has come to decide whether to tear it down, or refurbish it for use by both Second Pres and outside ministries. The trustees recommend the latter of these options. The Session received their report and asked a number of thoughtful questions.
At November's meeting, the Session will discuss their recommendation and come to a preliminary conclusion. This will be weighed against the options listed above when the campaign's goals are finalized early in 2010.
