The Ladder of Hope

11/22/09 “The Ladder of Hope” (sermon #4 from “Blessings in Pain” series)  Texts:  Psalm 116:1-9; Romans 5:1-8 (primary)

Paul promises us that we can move from suffering, to perseverance, to character, to hope.  Although he makes it sound like the most natural and automatic process in the world, whether or not we progress as he describes depends on the reason for our hope:  the extent to which we claim the life-giving, resurrection-empowered reason for our hope.  We do not cross our fingers and hope against hope; we hope in the one who raised Jesus from the dead, and who can raise us from our suffering.
