The Coming of the King

8/29/10 “Before Abraham Was, I am” (Sermon #2 from “The Coming of the King” series)  Texts:  Exodus 3:17-22 and John 8:48-59 (primary text)

In his debate with Jews who believed in him, Jesus tells them that “Before Abraham was born, I am.”  They know what he means—that he is just as much God as God the Father—but they don’t believe it.  Today, we also struggle to believe that Jesus is actually God the Son, the Second Person of the Trinity—but this is what the scriptures tell us and the church has proclaimed for centuries.  As important as what Jesus has said about himself, and what the church and others have said about him, is what we ourselves say about him.
